IELTS General Writing Task 1 Practice Questions
The following questions are realistic questions similar to those which you may get on test day. Of course, the same question will never appear twice, however, the format and style of the questions will be very similar to these.
If you have not read our guide on how to do IELTS writing task 1 letter writing tasks then it would be a good idea to read that first.
For all of the questions below:
You should spend about 20 minutes on the task.
Write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear .....................,
You have recently started work in a new company.
Write a letter to an English-speaking friend. In your letter
explain why you changed jobs
describe your newjob
tell him/her your other news.
Last month you had a holiday overseas where you stayed with some
friends. They have just sent you some photos of your holiday.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter
thank them for the photos and for the holiday
explain why you didn’t write earlier
invite them to come and stay with you.
You recently bought a piece of equipment for your kitchen but it did
not work. You phoned the shop but no action was taken.
Write a letter to the shop manager. In your letter
describe the problem with the equipment
explain what happened when you phoned the shop
say what you would like the manager to do.
On a recent holiday you lost a valuable item. Fortunately you have
travel insurance to cover the cost of anything lost.
Write a letter to the manager of your insurance company. In your letter
describe the item you lost
explain how you lost it
tell the insurance company what you would like them to do.
You live in a room in college which you share with another student.
However, there are many problems with this arrangement and you find it
very difficult to work. Write a letter to the accommodation officer at the college. In the letter:
describe the situation
explain your problems and why it is difficult to work
say what kind of accommodation you would prefer
You are studying for a qualification, and you would like some time off work to complete it. Write a letter to your manager. In your letter:
Ask for some time off to complete a qualification.
Suggest what you will do later at work if you have time off.
Say how the qualification helps your job or company.
You are looking for a part-time job. Write a letter to an employment agency. In your letter:
introduce yourself
explain what sort of job you would like
say what experience and skills you have
You live in an English speaking country and you want to do some voluntary, unpaid work in a developing country. Write a letter to a company called Cultural Expeditions, which organizes such trips. In your letter:
Explain why you want to do the voluntary work.
State what your skills and experience are.
Indicate where you would like to volunteer and for how long.
You eat at your college cafeteria every lunchtime. However, you think it needs some improvements. Write a letter to the college magazine. In your letter:
explain what you like bout the cafeteria
say what is wrong
suggest how it could be improved
You have received a letter from your bank, asking you to acknowledge receipt of a new bank card. However, the card was missing from the envelope. Write a letter to the bank's head office. In your letter:
explain why you are writing
express concern about the missing card
ask them what they intend to do
Write a letter to the manager of local council who is planning to pull down a historic building in your area due to lack of money to repair it. Expressing how unhappy you are and cover:
Why the building is important
What can be done with it in future
How to raise money for repairing it
You have joined a evening course in a local college, there is no problem in the course, but you have complaints on other facilities (room, equipment, etc). Write a letter to the administrator of the college. In you letter:
Tell what you like about the course
What problem you have in the facilities provided
Suggest on what can be done to resolve it
